What the Grammys lacked in nominated musicians, it made up in Dolly Parton hits featuring Dolly Parton on vocals. Kacey Musgraves and country dabbler Katy Perry opened the tribute to the 2019 MusiCares Person of the Year with her 1977 song “Here You Come Again,” before the Tennessee icon appeared in white.

Miley Cyrus did a quick change—having performed with Shawn Mendes earlier in the night—and met her godmother onstage for a rendition of “Jolene.” The pair added country star-turned-pop vocalist Maren Morris to the mix for a cover of Neil Young’s “After the Gold Rush.” (Parton covered the song previously with Emmylou Harris and and Linda Ronstadt on 1999’s Trio II.) Then country group Little Big Town came out for “Red Shoes,” a song on Parton’s 2018 record, Dumplin’. “This is a new song,” she said, by way of introduction.

The whole crew came out to close the medley with her 1980 hit “9 to 5,” from the soundtrack for the film of the same name. No one shone brighter, or sang better, than the night’s honoree herself, as is good and right.
