George Clooney Comes to His Friend Meghan Markle’s Defense

One of the many delights of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s wedding last May was spotting a bevy of unexpected celebrity guests: Oprah! Idris Elba! Carey Mulligan! Tom Hardy! And, of course, perhaps most glam of all: George and Amal Clooney. There had been reports that Amal and Meghan had become close, but it was not until the royal wedding that we had a sign that there was seemingly a real friendship between the couples. There were even accounts from the wedding reception that George poured his Casamigos tequila for guests and danced with Meghan at one point.

And then there were reports last August that Meghan and Harry spent some time at the Clooneys’ estate on Lake Como, which included some fantastic details. George apparently “showed Harry his collection of motorcycles.” Meanwhile, Amal and Meghan “spent much of their days lounging by the pool together and, of course, playing with the [Clooneys’] twins,” ABC reported at the time. George and Harry reportedly shot some hoops, too. And, but of course, the Clooneys threw “several banquets” for the Sussexes over their stay. (Yes, several banquets! Imagine staying with some friends for the weekend and there being just one banquet in your honor—not O.K.!)

George and Amal had not publicly discussed their relationship with the royal couple until Tuesday, when George spoke about Meghan at a T.C.A. panel for his new Hulu series, Catch-22. According to Australian magazine Who, Clooney compared the onslaught of attention on Meghan to that of the circus surrounding Princess Diana. “They’re just chasing Meghan Markle everywhere; she’s been pursued and vilified,” he said. “She’s a woman who is seven months pregnant, and she has been pursued and vilified and chased in the same way that Diana was, and it’s history repeating itself,” adding, “We’ve seen how that ends.”

In a less intense moment, Clooney was asked about the rumor circulating that he and Amal might be godparents to Harry and Meghan’s son or daughter. “Oh yes, I’ll be godfather of the royals apparently,” George joked, before quickly adding what People describes as an “emphatic” dismissal: “No!” He continued, “I’m a father of twins. I have enough shit to deal with—literally!”

George’s defense comes about a week after a People cover story in which five of Meghan’s friends—all of whom remained anonymous—spoke out on her behalf, defending her character and behavior amid what they see as “global bullying” of their friend.
