Kepa shrugs off world record price tag

Chelsea forked out 80 million euros to sign Kepa Arrizabalaga from Athletic Club but such a figure does not bother the young goalkeeper.

Remarking that shot-stoppers can be worth the same amount as attacking players, for which the world record is almost three times higher than Kepa’s own price tag, he dismissed any sense of pressure on his time in London.

“I don’t really think about it, Chelsea have made a great bet on taking me in,” he told reporters on Thursday. “I am really happy to be here and will do everything to pay the trust they have put in me.

“I don’t think there will be additional pressure, just the one I put on myself. I demand a lot from myself.

“I would say the market in general has gone up in price a lot in the last few years. It has to do with many things. I agree it is the way to value the goalkeepers. It is great to see fees for strikers, but why not goalkeepers?

Kepa came close to joining Real Madrid in January and yet there was no disappointment at the time as he eventually stayed in Bilbao.

“In January I was coming to the end of the contract,” he continued.

“There were negotiations but I thought at the time I was happy to stay. Now is a new stage for me and I am really happy for that.”
