The wife of Argentine superstar Lionel Messi has explained why she did not witness her husband’s humiliating penalty miss in their the opening World Cup game against Iceland.

Antonella Roccuzzo had not traveled to Russia yet and was not at the stadium during the match that saw her beau squander the crucial penalty.

Messi, 30, has suffered a barrage of criticism after failing to score the spot kick 63-minutes into the tie last Saturday.

Mother of the Argentine captain, Celia Cuccittini, said on a local TV station that her son “suffered and cried” over the criticism of his play in what could be his last World Cup.

The Barcelona star will have a chance to make amends and redeem his image tonight when his country play Croatia in the second game of the group stage at the Nizhny Novgorod Stadium.

Messi’s wife has opened up to television personality Cinthia Fernandeza and addressed rumours of her whereabouts.

“I did not go because I have very young children and because it was scheduled like this….Moreover, I want to enjoy some time with my family who I am not going to see until December, Rocuzzo wrote.”

Fernandez said that Roccuzzo chose to confide in her as she is “part of the football world” having recently divorced from Argentinian footballer Matias Defederico.

The mother of three is in her home town Rosario, in the Argentinian province of Santa Fe, with their children, Thiago,5, Mateo,2, and Ciro, who is only three months old.

Roccuzzo posted a heartfelt message of support for her husband on her Instagram page following his penalty miss.

She shared photo of herself and Messi with their three son, with the caption: “Always together and with you more than ever.”

Cuccittini has confirmed ahead of Thurday’s make-or-break clash against Croatia that her daughter-in-law will fly into Nizhny Novograd to cheer on her husband.

Messi’s mother told El Trece that the huge expectations placed on her son to lead Argentina for victory has proved difficult.

“His aim is to bring the Cup home, to win the World Cup…..It’s one of his biggest desires. We see him suffer and cry at times. He is the first who wants to bring the Cup with him….He more than anyone would give everything for this to be his World Cup,” Cuccittini said.

Argentina will be hoping the presence of his wife lifts his mood and improves his performance in tonight’s vital match.
