Morata criticised after laboured performance in season curtain-raiser

It was a chance for a new start for Alvaro Morata at Chelsea under new manager Maurizio Sarri and the Community Shield appeared the ideal opportunity to get it underway but a disappointing 2-0 defeat led to him being the target of criticism.

Afterwards he blamed for not showing enough willing and it was evident that he was short of confidence.

“Sarri looked to Morata who once again didn’t have enough belief, in games like this you need your big players to make a mark and he disappeared,” said former player Chris Sutton.

Richard Dunne was more cutting still: “Sarri needs a nine, he has Morata, Giroud and Batshuayi, someone he can have confidence in, in attack. I can’t see Morata doing that, I don’t see him with the desire to be a team player. He was terrible.”
