Mourinho left without deadline day deals ahead of Premier League campaign

The central defender that Jose Mourinho so desperately craved did not emerge on transfer deadline day to leave the Manchester United coach with a squad he’s not particularly fond of.

Whether it were mind games or genuine woe, the Portuguese continually insisted on more additions in his pre-season press conferences and only received Fred, Diogo Dalot and Lee Grant in return.

“I would like to have two more, maybe one if possible,” he said after losing 4-1 to Liverpool. “If it is not possible, we will continue fighting, working and believing in those we have.

“I asked for five players and they did not bring me any.”

On Thursday, Mourinho seemed to dismiss the chance of United signing anyone in the last knockings and yet reports emerged of enquiries for Jerome Boateng and Diego Godin, amid similar interest in Harry Maguire and Toby Alderweireld.

Alas, the Red Devils begin the season on Friday night at home to Leicester with only England internationals Phil Jones and Chris Smalling, joined by last summer’s arrivals, Eric Bailly and Victor Lindelof, for centre-backs.
