Trump Kim summit: Trump praises North Korea and promises to end "war games"

President Donald Trump has finally met North Korean leader Kim Jong-un and says negotiations between them ended in a “honest, direct and productive” joint agreement.

The two leaders have made commitments that would ensure the long-standing heightened between the two nations tensions simmer down henceforth. The United States would halt “war games” while North Korea had promised to destroy a missile testing site and also rid the Korean peninsula of nuclear weapons.

It caps a remarkable turnaround for the two, who only last year were engaged in angry threats.

The summit, the first between a sitting US president and a Noth Korean leader, focused on nuclear disarmament and reducing tensions. It was an unexpected turnaround for the two who less than a year ago engaged in angry threats. They were seen at the summit shaking hands, holding talks and eating lunch together with their advisors.

In the agreement, the two countries agreed to co-operate towards “new relations” while the US would provide “security guarantees” to North Korea.

The North Korean leader “reaffirmed his firm and unwavering commitment to complete denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula”.

Pyongyang has also agreed to “verified” denuclearisation — a key US demand before the summit, Mr Trump announcing to reporters after the meeting.

President Trump also said that he had raised the issue of human rights with Mr Kim and expects an improvement in that regard. The regime runs a totalitarian government with extreme censorship and forced-labour camps.
